You guys know the bulldog who skateboards? (he's in a commercial on tv for flooring I think?)
I decided I would teach my dog to skateboard. I have a child's skateboard, full size. The dog just wasnt getting it, but Ed was watching very closely to what I wanted from the dog. I gave the dog a break and Ed walked right onto the board *click and treat!* She's several step ahead of the dog in skateboard training now!
I'm not sure if she's strong enough to actually push the board, but we'll see when we start moving on (we're still on the getting the right feet position step).
My shaping steps for this behavior are as follows:
-with board between legs while sitting on floor, animal puts 1-2 paws on board(depends on the animal and how fast they are to put their feet on it)
-with board between legs while sitting on floor, animal puts 4 paws on board
-with board between legs while sitting on floor, animal puts 3 paws on board (this is in the right order)
-while standing, board between feet to keep from moving, animal puts 3 feet on board. learning how to approach and get on board for proper movement and position
-same as above, but with feet slightly farther apart so board rolls a couple inches
-keep increasing distance until you cant anymore
-board not between feet, call animal to board (and you) and they're off!
-advanced, send animal to board not near you, change body position and distance from board
