Clever Cats Share And Teach Others How To Use The Toilet

Almost Done With Training

Postby Cougar » Wed Feb 18, 2009 10:05 pm

OK. I guess we are first out on the board again. >no<

We have been training cougar now for about 8 weeks. We purchased a toilet training system online and he has bee adapting very well. We are close to the end of the training. Unfortunately we didn't capture the entire process online. Hopefully some else will be able to so that others can learn about the training process here. During the training Cougar had a couple of mistakes, but overall he has done very well. We would have been done but he has been fighting some bad chronic diarrhea. >nauseated<

He is now at the point where he gets it "in" the water most of the time.

Here are some pics of the toilet training. Its hard to get a good shot. He likes his privacy.

Is it too hard to teach them at an older age? My cat ringo is almost 5, will this confuse him?

Any age is fine. I would suggest Litter box training first though. So I wouldn't get a small kitten onto the toilet. Cougar started at about 6 months. He has shown lots of progress. I think he will be fully adapted by Mid-March. >nod< The trickiest part I think is getting the right position. I have noticed other cats use the same position every time. Cougar switches each time he uses it. Any advice out there?

Hey which toilet system are you using? I think I have the same one, and I'll be working with Mickey on it pretty soon.

There are a few on the market- some can even be home made. Check out the article in the How to Section. There is one called litter quiter and the other is citikiti.

Once your sweet kitty starts actually going into the toilet...do you think that would raise your water bill? i would love to train my kitty but that is my boyfriends only reservation >wave<
In greek mythology Ajax was Achillies cousin, and Io was Zues's lover that was turnered into a cow by Zues's jealous wife Hera. After she was human again she became a queen of Egypt and bore Zues two Children

Hi Mythkities!
To be honest, I had reservations too when my husband started with the idea of toilet training. I thought it would be impossible.
But this beats cleaning up kitty litter any day! We have not taught Cougar how to flush yet so we usually have to do it in the mornings when we wake up. He tends to use the toilet in the middle of the night.
What I love about it is that the floor is a lot cleaner, his paws are not dirty anymore and there is no smell. >no<
And kitty litter is not cheap either >dorky<
We got this toilet system called citikity and it worked perfect with him. Its a slow transition but I have no regrets!

I have read that its not hard to teach them to flush, some people hang toys by the handle while they learn, but we have not gotten to that yet.

Check out this article we did for the site, hope it helps. I would highly recommend buying a system as opposed to making one. >relieved<
